Memories
of the Fans : Electric
Light Orchestra
The first time I saw them was during the Face the
Music tour at the Glasgow Apollo Theatre
when they were really beginning to take off in a big way.
I was lucky enough to have a front row seat in the balcony.
A perfect view of what was going on. The sound was cracking
and ELO were using
for the first time ( probably in fact one of the first
bands to do so) a lazer lighting show.
Bearing in mind this was around 30 plus years ago, the technical
wizardry consisted of a roadie with a mirror deflecting
a rather bright green beam from the lazer onto the Apollo’s
mirror ball.
As this was so new, Jeff
Lynne told the audience that there was no need to worry,
everything was safe and that the light show would not send
anybody blind but, after using a fairly obscene hand gesture,
said that it was something else that could send you blind!
I’ll leave what he was meaning to your imagination.
Innocent days indeed.
