Memories
of the Fans : The Steve Gibbons
Band
I had the good fortune to see the SGB
at the Glasgow Apollo Theatre on a couple
of occasions. Once as support to Be Bop deluxe
and the other as support to ELO.
You may be aware that the Glasgow audience can be a wee
bit “special” depending on whether they like
an act or not. I have seen support acts give up because
of the reception they have received!
One particular vivid memory for me about the SGB
was the fact that Steve got a standing ovation for just
taking off his leather jacket and displaying a very ornate
leather waistcoat! The Glasgow audience loved good, honest
rock’n’roll, and Steve and the band were up
there with the best of them, Glasgow took them to it’s
heart. Not only were the SGB
one of the best support bands I have ever seen but they
were far better than a lot of so called headline bands I
have seen over the years. All great musicians and with great
pedigree!
I have seen Steve and other versions of the SGB
over the years but I supposed these gigs may fall outwith
your spread of years. Steve remains, to this day, a great
singer/songwriter who deserves/deserved a lot more fame
and credit than he got.
